Mathematical Complexity of Simple Economics
Notices of the AMS February 1995
Abstract: The "invisible hand" of Adam Smith guides economies to stable equilibria. Or does it? Such equilibria exist for a simple model of exchange of n >= 2 goods among n agents, but it is shown, even under the most natural of assumptions, that there always are initial endowments which lead to chaotic dynamics.

Description: A class X of Lie algebras is a countably recognizable class of a Lie algebra L \in X whenever any subset x of L with |x| \leq \aleph_0 is contained in an X-subalgebra of L. The classes of Lie algebras with the following properties are countably recognizable: hypercentral, hyperabelian, soluble, nilpotent, Fitting, Baer, ideally finite, satisfying the maximal conditions on ideals, satisfying the minimal conditions on ideal, and related conditions on subideals.

Correlation matrices of yields and total positivity
Linear Algebra and its Applications Volume 418, Issues 2-3 , 15 October 2006, Pages 682-692
Abstract: It has been empirically observed that correlation matrices of forward interest rates have the first three eigenvalues which are simple and their corresponding eigenvectors, termed as shift, slope and curvature respectively, with elements presenting changes of sign in a regular way. These spectral properties are very similar to those exhibited by Strictly Totally Positive and Oscillatory matrices. In the present paper we investigate how these spectral properties are related with those characterizing the correlation matrices considered, i.e. the positivity and the monotonicity of their elements. On the basis of these relations we prove the simplicity of the first two eigenvalues and provide an estimate of the second one.

Embeddings of higher Lie modules

Abstract: The higher Lie modules of the general linear group GL(V) over a finite dimensional vector space V arise naturally from the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the tensor algebra over V. They are indexed by partitions. For the higher Lie modules corresponding to hook partitions of n a complete chain of embeddings is obtained. As an application, a new inductive proof of Klyachko's result on the irreducible components of the classical Lie module is given. Additionally, all irreducible components of multiplicity 1 are determined.

Hochschild cohomology for complex spaces and Noetherian schemes
arXiv:math.AG/0303029, 41 pages
Abstract: The classical HKR-theorem gives an isomorphism of the n-th Hochschild cohomology of a smooth algebra and the n-th exterior power of its module of K\"ahler differentials. Here we generalize it for simplicial, graded and anticommutative objects in ``good pairs of categories''. We apply this generalization to complex spaces and noetherian schemes and deduce two decomposition theorems for their (relative) Hochschild cohomology (special cases of those were recently shown by Buchweitz-Flenner and Yekutieli). The first one shows that Hochschild cohomology contains tangent cohomology: $\HH^n(X/Y,\sM)=\coprod_{i-j=n}\Ext^i(\dach^j\LL(X/Y),\sM)$. The left side is the n-th Hochschild cohomology of $X$ over $Y$ with values in $\sM$. The right hand-side contains the $n$-th relative tangent cohomology $\Ext^n(\LL(X/Y),\sM)$ as direct factor. The second consequence is a decomposition theorem for Hochschild cohomology of complex analytic manifolds and smooth schemes in characteristic zero: $\HH^n(X)=\coprod_{i-j=n}H^i(X,\dach^j\sT_X).$ On the right hand-side we have the sheaf cohomology of the exterior powers of the tangent complex.

Regular Neighbourhoods and Canonical Decompositions for Groups
math.GR/0110210
Abstract: We find canonical decompositions for finitely presented groups which specialize to the classical JSJ-decomposition when restricted to the fundamental groups of Haken manifolds. The decompositions that we obtain are invariant under automorphisms of the group. A crucial new ingredient is the concept of a regular neighbourhood for a finite family of almost invariant subsets of a group. An almost invariant set is an analogue of an immersion.

J. Alg. 249 (2002), N1, 95-109
Abstract: The notion of a strongly nilpotent element of a Lie algebra is introduced. According to the existence or nonexistence of nontrivial strongly nilpotent elements, the simple modular Lie algebras are divided into two categories, CA type and CL type, which coincide with Lie algebras of generalized Cartan type and classical type, respectively, when the characteristic is greater than 7. Examples of nonclassical simple Lie algebras of CL type are given which all have affinities to the classical Lie algebras.

Poisson brackets and two-generated subalgebras of rings of polynomials
J. Amer. Math. Soc. 17 (2003), N1, 181-196
MR 2004h:13022
Abstract: We introduce a Poisson bracket on the ring of polynomials over a field of characteristic and apply it to the investigation of subalgebras of the algebra . An analogue of the Bergman Centralizer Theorem is proved for the Poisson bracket in . The main result is a lower estimate for the degrees of elements of subalgebras of generated by so-called -reduced pairs of polynomials. The estimate involves a certain invariant of the pair which depends on the degrees of the generators and of their Poisson bracket. It yields, in particular, a new proof of the Jung theorem on the automorphisms of polynomials in two variables. Some relevant examples of two-generated subalgebras are given and some open problems are formulated.

Abstract: Some facts concerning with structure of solvable restricted Lie algebras satisfying finiteness conditions on commutative restricted subalgebras are proved. For metabelian restricted Lie algebra without nontrivial finite-dimensional restricted subalgebras some cohomological sufficient condition to be of finite rang is obtained. Restricted Lie algebra over GF (2) providing an example when this condition is not necessary is found.

Operads as abstract algebras, and the Koszul property
Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, 143(1999), 381-407
Description: The purpose of this work is to clarify some aspects of the theory of operads - especially of Koszul operads. We describe the free operad and give the categorical bar construction in terms of it. After giving a description of operads as abstract "algebras", we give a self-contained proof of Theorem 4.1.13 of Ginzburg and Kapranov (1994). Our approach uses two spectral sequences associated to the categorical cobar complex of a Koszul operad. *** possibly related to possibility to define cohomology of anything in terms of operad (in Gerstanhaber's words) ***

The CROCs, non-commutative deformations, and (co)associative bialgebras
arXiv:math.QA/0306143, 18 pages
Abstract: We compactify the spaces $K(m,n)$ introduced by Maxim Kontsevich. The initial idea was to construct an $L_\infty$ algebra governing the deformations of a (co)associative bialgebra. However, this compactification leads not to a resolution of the PROP of (co)associative bialgebras, but to a new algebraic structure we call here a CROC. It turns out that these constructions are related to the non-commutative deformations of (co)associative bialgebras. We construct an associative dg algebra conjecturally governing the non-commutative deformations of a bialgebra. Then, using the Quillen duality, we construct a dg Lie algebra conjecturally governing the commutative (usual) deformations of a (co)associative bialgebra. Philosophically, the main point is that for the associative bialgebras the non-commutative deformations is maybe a more fundamental object than the usual commutative ones.
A proof of the Tsygan formality conjecture for chains
Adv. Math. 179 (2003), N1, 7-37
Preprint IHES 2001, M/01/28
Abstract: We extend the Kontsevich formality L-morphism to an L-morphism of L-modules over . The construction of the map is given in Kontsevich-type integrals. The conjecture that such an L-morphism exists is due to Boris Tsygan (Formality Conjecture for Chains, math. QA/9904132). As an application, we obtain an explicit formula for isomorphism (A* is the Kontsevich deformation quantization of the algebra A by a Poisson bivector field, and {,} is the Poisson bracket). We also formulate a conjecture extending the Kontsevich theorem on cup-products to this context. The conjecture implies a generalization of the Duflo formula, and many other things.
A concept of 2/3PROP and deformation theory of (co)associative bialgebras
arXiv:math.QA/0311337
Abstract: We introduce a concept of $\frac23$PROP generalizing the Kontsevich concept of $\frac12$PROP. We prove that some Stasheff-type compactification of the Kontsevich spaces $K(m,n)$ defines a topological $\frac23$PROP structure. The corresponding chain complex is a minimal model for its cohomology (both are considered as $\frac23$PROPs). We construct a $\frac23$PROP $\End(V)$ for a vector space $V$. Finally, we construct a dg Lie algebra controlling the deformations of a (co)associative bialgebra. Philosophically, this construction is a version of the Markl's operadic construction from [M1] applied to minimal models of $\frac23$PROPs.

Copied citations create renowned papers?
cond-mat/0305150
Abstract: Recently we discovered (cond-mat/0212043) that the majority of scientific citations are copied from the lists of references used in other papers. Here we show that a model, in which a scientist picks three random papers, cites them, and also copies a quarter of their references accounts quantitatively for empirically observed citation distribution. Simple mathematical probability, not genius, can explain why some papers are cited a lot more than the other.
An introduction to the theory of citing
math.ST/0701086
Significance, vol 3, no 4, pp 179-181 (2006)
Abstract: Statistical analysis of repeat misprints in scientific citations leads to the conclusion that about 80% of scientific citations are copied from the lists of references used in othe papers. Based on this finding a mathematical theory of citing is constructed. It leads to the conclusion that a large number of citations does not have to be a result of paper's extraordinary qualities, but can be explained by the ordinary law of chances.

Structure theory for one class of locally finite Lie algebras
arXiv:math.RA/0310208
Abstract: In this paper I consider locally finite Lie algebras of characteristic zero satisfying the condition that for every finite number of elements $x_{1}, x_{2},..., x_{k}$ of such an algebra $L$ there is finite-dimensional subalgebra $A$ which contains these elements and $L(adA)^n\subset A$ for some integer $n$. For such algebras I prove several structure theorems that can be regarded as generalizations of the classical structure theorems of the finite-dimensional Lie algebras theory.

Cohomology theory of the Virasaro algebra.

MR 87f:17016
MR Review: The Virasoro algebra ${\germ g}$ is the Lie algebra with generators $J_i$, where $i$ ranges over the integers, and defining relations $[J_i,J_j]=(j-i)J_{i+j}$ (sometimes, the name is used for a central extension of ${\germ g}$). Recently, \n I. Kaplansky\en \ref[Comm. Math. Phys. 86 (1982), no. 1, 49--54; MR 84c:17012] showed that rather mild conditions on a Z-graded Lie algebra force it to be isomorphic to ${\germ g}$. Similarly, rather mild conditions on a ${\germ g}\text{-module}$ force it to be isomorphic to a ${\germ g} \text{-module}$ of a very simple kind, called a Kaplansky module $V$ ($V$ depends on two real parameters). Under an additional condition on $V$, the author computes the cohomology of ${\germ g}$ with coefficients in $V$.
