Central extensions in universal algebra: a unification of three notions

Abstract: We compare the categorical notion of central extension introduced in an earlier paper of ours, which generalized that used previously in non-abelian homological algebra by Fröhlich and Lue, with the notion of centrality arising from commutator theory in universal algebra, showing that they agree in the most important cases.

Semi-abelian categories
Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, 168(2002), 367-386
Description: The notion of semi-abelian category as proposed in this paper is designed to capture typical algebraic properties valid for groups, rings and algebras, say, just as abelian categories allow for a generalized treatment of abelian-group and module theory. In modern terms, semi-abelian categories are exact in the sense of Barr and protomodular in the sense of Bourn and have finite coproducts and a zero object. We show how these conditions relate to "old" exactness axioms involving normal monomorphisms and epimorphisms, as used in the fifties and sixties, and we give extensive references to the literature in order to indicate why semi-abelian categories provide an appropriate notion to establish the isomorphism and decomposition theorems of group theory, to pursue general radical theory of rings, and how to arrive at basic statements as needed in homological algebra of groups and similar non-abelian structures.

MR 88e:17019
Description: Let $L$ be a finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field $k$ of nonzero characteristic $p$. There is a natural $k$-linear map from the dual $k$-vector space $L\sp *$ into the second cohomology group $H\sp 2(L,k)\sp !$ with the $k$-vector space structure defined by $a!h=a\sp ph$ $(a\in k)$. It induces a morphism of commutative $k$-algebras from the symmetric algebra $S(L\sp *)$ into $\bigoplus\sb {i\ge 0} H\sp {2i}(L,k)\sp !$. Let $I\sb L(k)$ be its kernel. The author proves that the set of $x\in L$ whose $p$th power is zero is exactly the set of elements of $L$ which annihilate all the elements of $I\sb L(k)$.

Ultraproducts and the discrete cohomology of algebraic groups
Algebraic K-Theory, Fields Institute Communications, AMS, Vol. 16, 1997, 111-130
Abstract: This paper gives a reformulation of the generalized isomorphism conjecture of Friedlander and Milnor on the discrete cohomology of special linear groups, in terms of ultraproducts of classifying spaces of special linear groups over algebraic closures of finite fields. The classical ultraproduct construction is reinterpreted in terms of various stalks of direct image sheaves on a topos associated to the category of subsets of a fixed index set equipped with topology of finite coverings, so that the problem underlying the Friedlander-Milnor conjecture is a question of whether or not a particular map of simplicial objects in this topos is a homology isomorphism. The conjecture is a consequence of a statement about ultraproducts of classifying spaces which involve only finite fields.

Abstract: Let L = L(x1,...,xn) be a graded Lie algebra generated by x1,...,xn. In this paper, we show that for any element P in Land any order k, exp(P) may be approximated at the order k by a finite product of elementary factors exp(a_i x_{i}). We give an explicit construction that avoids any calculation in the Lie algebra.

On Constructing Resolutions Over the Polynomial Algebra
Homology, Homotopy and Applications, Vol. 4(2), 2002, pp. 315-336
Abstract: Let $k$ be a field, and $A$ be a polynomial algebra over $k$. Let $I\subseteq A$ be an ideal. We present a novel method for computing resolutions of $A/I$ over $A$. The method is a synthesis of Gr\"obner basis techniques and homological perturbation theory. The examples in this paper were computed using computer algebra.

On the multigraded Hilbert and Poincare'-Betti series and the Golod property of monomial rings
Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra Volume 207, Issue 2 , October 2006, Pages 261-298
Abstract: In this paper we study the multigraded Hilbert and Poincare'-Betti series of , where S is the ring of polynomials in n indeterminates divided by the monomial ideal . There is a conjecture about the multigraded Poincare'-Betti series by Charalambous and Reeves which they proved in the case where the Taylor resolution is minimal. We introduce a conjecture about the minimal A-free resolution of the residue class field and show that this conjecture implies the conjecture of Charalambous and Reeves and, in addition, gives a formula for the Hilbert series. Using Algebraic Discrete Morse theory, we prove that the homology of the Koszul complex of A with respect to x1,...,xn is isomorphic to a graded commutative ring of polynomials over certain sets in the Taylor resolution divided by an ideal of relations. This leads to a proof of our conjecture for some classes of algebras A. We also give an approach for the proof of our conjecture via Algebraic Discrete Morse theory in the general case. The conjecture implies that A is Golod if and only if the product (i.e. the first Massey operation) on the Koszul homology is trivial. Under the assumption of the conjecture we finally prove that a very simple purely combinatorial condition on the minimal monomial generating system of implies Golodness for A.

The direct extension theorem
arXiv:math.GR/0403230, 8 pages
Abstract: The problem of group extension can be divided into two sub-problems. The first is to find all the possible extensions of $H$ by $K$. The second is to find the different ways a group $G$ can arise as an extension of $H$ by $K$. Here we prove that the direct product $H\times K$ can arise as an extension of $H$ by $K$ in an essentially unique way: that is the direct extension.
