The Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties for Artinian K-Algebras
math.AG/0208201
To appear in J. Algebra
Description: Let A = bigoplus_{i >= 0} A_i be a standard graded Artinian K-algebra, where char K = 0. Then A has the Weak Lefschetz property if there is an element ell of degree 1 such that the multiplication times ell : A_i --> A_{i+1} has maximal rank, for every i, and A has the Strong Lefschetz property if times ell^d : A_i --> A_{i+d} has maximal rank for every i and d. The main results obtained in this paper are the following. 1) EVERY height three complete intersection has the Weak Lefschetz property. (Our method, surprisingly, uses rank two vector bundles on P^2 and the Grauert-Mulich theorem.) 2) We give a complete characterization (including a concrete construction) of the Hilbert functions that can occur for K-algebras with the Weak or Strong Lefschetz property (and the characterization is the same one). 3) We give a sharp bound on the graded Betti numbers (achieved by our construction) of Artinian K-algebras with the Weak or Strong Lefschetz property and fixed Hilbert function. This bound is again the same for both properties. Some Hilbert functions in fact FORCE the algebra to have the maximal Betti numbers. 4) EVERY Artinian ideal in K[x,y] possesses the Strong Lefschetz property. This is false in higher codimension.

An algebraic theory of portfolio allocation
Economic Theory 22 (2003), N1, 193-210
Abstract: Using group and majorization theory, we explore what can be established about allocation of funds among assets when asymmetries in the returns vector are carefully controlled. The key insight is that preferences over allocations can be partially ordered via majorized convex hulls that have been generated by a permutation group. Group transitivity suffices to ensure complete portfolio diversification. Point-wise stabilizer subgroups admit sectoral separability in fund allocations. We also bound the admissible allocation vector by a set of linear constraints the coefficients of which are determined by group operations on location and scale asymmetries in the rate of returns vector. For a distribution that is symmetric under a reflection group, the linear constraints may be further strengthened whenever there exists an hyperplane that separates convex sets.

Zbl Review: We are interested in deciding if a given nonassociative polynomial h is an identity for a variety of nonassociative algebras. We present an algorithm for constructing a certain homomorphic image of a free nonassociative algebra which is sufficient to answer the question. The algorithm resembles dynamic programming in that the algebra is built by constructing a sequence of subspaces; the basis of each subspace is determined by the basis of previous subspaces...

Cyclic operads and algebra of chord diagrams
math.QA/0005197, 49 pages
Abstract: We prove that the algebra $\cal{A}$ of chord diagrams, the dual to the associated graded algebra of Vassiliev knot invariants, is isomorphic to the universal enveloping algebra of a Casimir Lie algebra in a certain tensor category (the PROP for Casimir Lie algebras). This puts on a firm ground a known statement that the algebra $\cal{A}$ ``looks and behaves like a universal enveloping algebra''. An immediate corollary of our result is the conjecture of Bar-Natan, Garoufalidis, Rozansky, and Thurston on the Kirillov-Duflo isomorphism for algebras of chord diagrams. Our main tool is a general construction of a functor from the category $\mathtt{CycOp}$ of cyclic operads to the category $\mathtt{ModOp}$ of modular operads which is left adjoint to the ``tree part'' functor $\mathtt{ModOp} \to \mathtt{CycOp}$. The algebra of chord diagrams arises when this construction is applied to the operad for Lie algebras. Another example of this construction is Kontsevich's graph complex that corresponds to the operad for homotopy Lie algebras.

Free Subgroups of the Group of Infinite Unitriangular Matrices
International Journal of Algebra and Computation, Vol. 13, No. 1 (2003) 81-86
Abstract: In this note we give simple explicit examples of free subgroups of rank 2 in the group of infinite upper unitriangular matrices over integers. The proofs that the given subgroup is free are elementary. Using canonical projections mod p (p -- any odd prime) we obtain also free subgroups in the group of finite state automata on alphabet of size p, extending results of Aleshin [1], Brunner-Sidki [2] and Olijnyk-Sushchansky [8, 9] in this direction. As application, we give the simple proofs of two classical results on free groups.

Abstract: Let L be a Lie algebra represented as a sum of two subalgebras A and B. We prove that if L belongs to a subclass of the class of locally finite Lie algebras over a field of characteristic and both A and B are locally nilpotent, then L is locally soluble. We also prove that if L is a serially finite Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero, then any common serial subalgebra of A and B is serial in L.

Euler characteristics of arithmetic groups
math.GR/0311117
Abstract: We develop a general method for computing the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups G of GL_m(O_K) where O_K is the ring of integers in a number field K. With this method we find, that for large, explicitly computed dimensions m, the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups of GL_m(O_K) vanishes. For other cases, some of them very important for spaces of multiple polylogarithms, we compute non-zero homological Euler characteristic. With the same method we find all the torsion elements in GL_3(Z) up to conjugation. Finally, our method allows us to obtain a formula for the Dedekind zeta function at -1 in terms of the ideal class set and the multiplicative group of quadratic extensions of the base ring.

Abstract: For q generic or q = epsilon, a primitive lth root of 1, q-Witt algebras are described by means of q-divided power algebras. The q-Lie algebras are investigated and the q-PBW theorem for universal enveloping algebras of q-Lie algebras is proved. A realization of a class of representations of q-Witt algebras is given. Based on it, the q-holomorph structure for q-Witt algebras is constructed, which interprets the realization in the context of representation theory.
