A $G_\infty$-formality theorem in terms of graphs and associated Chevalley-Eilenberg-Harrison cohomology
Preprint IRMA 2003-015
Abstract: In 1997, M. Kontsevich proved the $L_\infty$ formality conjecture (which implies existence of star-products for any Poisson manifold) using graphs. A year later, D. Tamarkin gave another proof of a more general conjecture (for $G_\infty$ structures) using operads and cohomological methods. In this paper, we show how Tamarkin's construction can be done using graphs. For that, we introduce a generalization of Kontsevich graphs on which we define a ``Chevalley-Eilenberg-Harrison" complex. We show that this complex on graphs is trivial, which gives Tamarkin's formality theorem as a consequence, and from which one can find Kontsevich construction as a particular case.

Chain extensions of D-algebras and their applications
math.QA/0311372
Abstract: In order to unify the methods which have been applied to various topics such as BRST theory of constraints, Poisson brackets of local functionals, and certain developments in deformation theory, we formulate a new concept which we call the {\it chain extension} of a $D$-algebra. We develop those aspects of this new idea which are central to applications to algebra and physics. Chain extensions may be regarded as generalizations of ordinary algebraic extensions of Lie algebras. Applications of our theory provide a new constructive approach to BRST theories which only contains three terms; in particular, this provides a new point of view concerning consistent deformations. Finally, we show how Lie algebra deformations are encoded into the structure maps of an sh-Lie algebra with three terms.

Abstract: In this paper we describe the Tits-Kantor-Koecher superalgebras associated to Jordan superpairs covered by grids, extending results from Neher (Neher, E. (1996). Lie algebras graded by 3-graded root systems and Jordan pairs covered by a grid. Amer. J. Math. 118; 439-491) to the supercase. These Lie superalgebras together with their central coverings are precisely the Lie superalgebras graded by a 3-graded root system.

Abstract: One extends Loday-Procesi lambda-operations from the cyclic homology of A to the homology of the Lie algebra gl_\infty(A) using exterior powers of matrices. In this way, we obtain an interpretation of this lambda-operations, originally defined in combinatorial terms, in terms of matrix operations. One shows a formula giving their behavior with respect to the direct sum of matrices. It uses the coproduct and the structure of ring objet induced by the tensor product of matrices.

On the cohomology of the Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields
J. Funct. Anal. 108 (1992), No.2, 347-360
MR 93g:17039
Zentralblatt: 0783.17009
Abstract: The work of Gelfand and Fuchs [Funkt. Anal. Appl. 4, 110-116 (1970); Zbl 0208.514)] concerning the cohomology of the Lie algebra of all vector fields on a manifold is extended to the cohomology of the Lie algebra of all Hamiltonian vector fields on a symplectic manifold. The case of an even-dimensional algebraic torus is treated in detail.

Co-Addition for free Non-Associative Algebras and the Hausdorff Series
math.RA/0207083
Description: Generalizations of the series exp and log to noncommutative non-associative and other types of algebras were regarded by M.Lazard, and recently by V.Drensky and L.Gerritzen. There is a unique power series exp(x) in one non-associative variable x such that exp(x)exp(x)=exp(2x), exp'(0)=1. We call the unique series H=H(x,y) in two non-associative variables satisfying exp(H)=exp(x)exp(y) the non-associative Hausdorff series, and we show that the homogeneous components of H are primitive elements with respect to the co-addition for non-associative variables. We describe the space of primitive elements for the co-addition in non-associative variables using Taylor expansion and a projector onto the algebra A_0 of constants w.r.t. the partial derivations, which contains all non-linear primitive elements. By a theorem of Kurosh, A_0 is a free algebra. We describe a procedure to construct a free algebra basis which consists of primitive elements.

Fast computation of the Smith form of a sparse integer matrix
Computational Complexity Volume 10 Issue 1 (2001), pp 41-69
Abstract: We present a new probabilistic algorithm to compute the Smith normal form of a sparse integer matrix $ A \in {\Bbb Z}^{m \times n} $. The algorithm treats A as a "black box" - A is only used to compute matrix-vector products and we do not access individual entries in A directly. The algorithm requires about $ O(m^2 {\rm log} \parallel A \parallel) $ black box evaluations $ w \mapsto Aw\,{\rm mod}\,p $ for word-sized primes p and $ w \in {\Bbb Z}^{n \times 1}_p $, plus $ O(m^2 n\,{\rm log} \parallel A \parallel +\,m^3\,{\rm log^2} \parallel A \parallel) $ additional bit operations. For sparse matrices this represents a substantial improvement over previously known algorithms. The new algorithm suffers from no "fill-in" or intermediate value explosion, and uses very little additional space. We also present an asymptotically fast algorithm for dense matrices which requires about $ O(n \cdot {\rm MM}(m)\,{\rm log} \parallel A \parallel +\,m^3\,{\rm log^2} \parallel A \parallel) $ bit operations, where O(MM(m)) operations are sufficient to multiply two $ m \times m $ matrices over a field. Both algorithms are probabilistic of the Monte Carlo type - on any input they return the correct answer with a controllable, exponentially small probability of error.

Predicting Structure in Sparse Matrix Computations
SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications 15(1994), N1, 62-79
Abstract: Many sparse matrix algorithms---for example, solving a sparse system of linear equations---begin by predicting the nonzero structure of the output of a matrix computation from the nonzero structure of its input. This paper is a catalog of ways to predict nonzero structure. It contains known results for some problems, including various matrix factorizations, and new results for other problems, including some eigenvector computations.

Abstract: Let M be a differential manifold. Using different methods, Kontsevich and Tamarkin have proved a formality theorem, which states the existence of a Lie homomorphism 'up to homotopy' between the Lie algebra of Hochschild cochains on C¥(M) and its cohomology (G(M, LTM), [-, -]S). Suppose M is a Poisson manifold equipped with a Poisson tensor p; then one can deduce from this theorem the existence of a star product * on C¥(M). In this Letter we prove that the formality theorem can be extended to a Lie (and even Gerstenhaber) homomorphism 'up to homotopy' between the Lie (resp. Gerstenhaber 'up to homtoptopy') algebra of Hochschild cochains on the deformed algebra (C¥(M), *) and the Poisson complex (G(M, LTM), [p, -]S). We will first recall Tamarkin's proof and see how the formality maps can be deduced from Etingof and Kazhdan's theorem using only homotopies formulas. The formality theorem for Poisson manifolds will then follow.

Eigenvalue computation in the 20th century
J. Comput. Appl. Math. 123(2000), N1-2, 35-65
Abstract: This paper sketches the main research developments in the area of computational methods for eigenvalue problems during the 20th century. The earliest of such methods dates back to work of Jacobi in the middle of the 19th century. Since computing eigenvalues and vectors is essentially more complicated than solving linear systems, it is not surprising that highly significant developments in this area started with the introduction of electronic computers around 1950. In the early decades of this century, however, important theoretical developments had been made from which computational techniques could grow. Research in this area of numerical linear algebra is very active, since there is a heavy demand for solving complicated problems associated with stability and perturbation analysis for practical applications. For standard problems, powerful tools are available, but there still remain many open problems. It is the intention of this contribution to sketch the main developments of this century, especially as they relate to one another, and to give an impression of the state of the art at the turn of our century.

Abstract: We show that any pair of compatible Lie brackets with a common invariant form produces a nonconstant solution of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We describe the corresponding Poisson brackets, Manin triples, and Lie bialgebras. It turns out that all bialgebras associated with the solutions found by Belavin and Drinfeld are isomorphic to some bialgebras generated by our solutions. For any compatible pair, we construct a double with a common invariant form and find the corresponding solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation for this double.

Description: There are several examples of groups for which any pair of commutators can be written such that both of them have a common entry, and one can look for a similar property for $n$-tuples of commutators. We here answer, for simple algebraic groups over any field, the weaker question, under which condition the set of $n$-tuples of commutators with one common entry is Zariski dense in the set of all $n$-tuples of commutators. Surprisingly, there is a uniform bound on $n$ in terms of the so called Coxeter number of $G$ in order to answer the question positively. An analogoue result is proved for Lie algebras of simple and simply connected algebraic groups.

Commutators in finite simple groups of Lie type.
Bull. London Math. Soc. 32(2000), 311-315
Abstract: Using properties of the Steinberg character, we obtain a congruence modulo p for the number of ways in which a p-regular element may be expressed as a commutator in a finite simple group G of Lie type of characteristic p. This congruence shows that such an element is a commutator in G. We also show that if K and L are conjugacy classes of G consisting of elements whose centralizers have order relatively prime to p, then any p-regular element of G is expressible as the product of an element of K and an element of L.
