Structure theory for multiplicatively semiprime algebras
DOI: 10.1016/j.jalgebra.2004.07.035
J. Algebra 282 (2004), N1, 386-421
Description: An (nonassociative) algebra is called multiplicatively semiprime, if it is semiprime and its multiplcation algebra is semiprime. A sort of structure theory for them is developed. Particularly, a finite-dimensional algebra is multiplicatively semiprime iff it is a direct sum of simple algebras.

Abstract: We classify those finite dimensional Lie algebras, over a field $\k$ of characteristic zero, whose cohomology with trivial coefficients has dimension 2. We show that the only such algebras are the 3-dimensional simple algebras and the semi-direct products $\n\rtimes_\phi \k$, where $\n$ is a nilpotent Lie algebra and $\phi\colon\n\to \n$ is a derivation which induces a non-singular map in each cohomology space $H^i(\n)$, for $i>0$.

Algebraic deformations arising from orbifolds with discrete torsion
math.KT/0210027
JPAA 187 (2004), no. 1-3, 51--70
Abstract: We develop methods for computing Hochschild cohomology groups and deformations of crossed product rings. We use these methods to find deformations of a ring associated to a particular orbifold with discrete torsion, and give a presentation of the center of the resulting deformed ring. This connects with earlier calculations by Vafa and Witten of chiral numbers and deformations of a similar orbifold.

Passages of Proof
math.HO/0305213
Abstract: In this paper we propose a new perspective on the evolution and history of the idea of mathematical proof. Proofs will be studied at three levels: syntactical, semantical and pragmatical. Computer-assisted proofs will be give a special attention. Finally, in a highly speculative part, we will anticipate the evolution of proofs under the assumption that the quantum computer will materialize. We will argue that there is little `intrinsic' difference between traditional and `unconventional' types of proofs.

Cohomology Rings of Finite Groups
Kluwer, 2003, 790 pp.
Abstract: This text offers comprehensive coverage of group cohomology, from introductory material through the most recent developments in the field. The primary motivation for this book is the interaction of group cohomology with representation theory, especially the geometry of support varieties over cohomology rings. The appendices, comprising computer calculations of the mod-2 cohomology rings of the groups whose orders divide 64, provide information useful for further developments in the field. A unique feature of this text is that it includes the concepts that are the subject of the calculations and are the source of some of the motivating conjectures for the computations. The programs for computing the cohomology rings were executed in the MAGMA computer algebra language.

A geometric framework for sparse matrix problems

Abstract: In this paper, we set up a geometric framework for solving sparse matrix problems. We introduce geometric sparseness, a notion which applies to several well-known families of sparse matrix. Two algorithms are presented for solving geometrically-sparse matrix problems. These algorithms are inspired by techniques in classical algebraic topology, and involve the construction of a simplicial complex from certain data on the matrix. In both cases, large parts of the computation can be parallelised.

Abstract: We introduce a bicomplex which computes the triple cohomology of Lie--Rinehart algebras. We prove that the triple cohomology is isomorphic to the Rinehart cohomology \cite{Ri} provided the Lie--Rinehart algebra is projective over the corresponding commutative algebra. As an application we construct a canonical class in the third dimensional cohomology corresponding to an associative algebra.

PBW-deformation theory and regular central extensions
arXiv:math.RA/0603375
Abstract: A deformation $U$, of a graded $K$-algebra $A$ is said to be of PBW type if $grU$ is $A$. It has been shown for Koszul and $N$-Koszul algebras that the deformation is PBW if and only if the relations of $U$ satisfy a Jacobi type condition. In particular, for these algebras the determination of the PBW property is a {\it finite} and explicitly determined linear algebra problem. We extend these results to an arbitrary graded $K$-algebra, using the notion of central extensions of algebras and a homological constant attached to $A$ which we call the {\it complexity} of $A$.

Abstract: We associate to a Young diagram a complex of strict polynomial functors which we call the Schur-De-Rham complex. Its cohomology turns out to reflect deep combinatorial properties of a diagram. We show that if a ground field is of characteristic p, the Schur-De-Rham complex is acyclic when the p-core of a diagram is nontrivial. We also compute its cohomology for a diagram with a trivial p-core and p-quotient consisting of a single diagram.

Extensions of strict polynomial functors
Hopf preprints archive, 2003
Abstract: We compute Ext-groups between various strict polynomial functors important in representation theory (eg. between twisted Weyl and Schur functors). Our method utilizes: computation of the Ext-groups between twisted divided and symmetric powers due to Franjou-Friedlander-Scorichenko-Suslin, resolutions of functors by divided and symmetric powers, interplay between functors and representations of the symmetric group.

Extensions of Weyl and Schur functors
Hopf preprints archive, 2003
Abstract: We use here the Schur-De-Rham complex to extend calculations of the Ext-groups between twisted Weyl and Schur functors initiated in the paper ``Extensions of strict polynomial functors''. The main result is a full calculation of those groups in the case of a pair of diagrams which can be obtained from diagrams of the same weights by the operation F described in ``Schur-De-Rham complex and its cohomology''.

Spectral characters of finite-dimensional representations of affine algebras

Abstract: We introduce the notion of a spectral character for finite-dimensional representations of affine algebras. These can be viewed as a suitable q=1 limit of the elliptic characters defined by Etingof and Moura for quantum affine algebras. We show that these characters determine blocks of the category of finite-dimensional modules for affine algebras. To do this we use the Weyl modules defined by Chari and Pressley and some indecomposable reducible quotient of the Weyl modules.

Plus-construction of algebras over an operad, cyclic and Hochschild homologies up to homotopy
arXiv:math.AT/0301130
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show how to apply the manichery of homotopical localization to the framework of differential graded algebras over an operad. By performing nullification with respect to an universal acyclic algebra one obtains plus construction. This plus construction applied to Lie and Leibniz algebras up to homotopy yields two new homology theories for associative algebras. They are closed to cyclic and Hochschild homologies. We also compute the first homology groups of these theories.

Analogue of Kostant's u-cohomology formula for the general linear superalgebra
IMRN 2004:1 (2004) 31-53
Abstract: We determine in an explicit form the Lie superalgebra cohomology groups of the upper triangular odd subalgebra ( 𝔤𝔩 𝔪|𝔫) +1 of the general linear superalgebra 𝔤𝔩 𝔪|𝔫 with coefficients in irreducible tensor modules over 𝔤𝔩 𝔪|𝔫. Using this, we develop a Weyl-type character formula for the irreducible tensor representations. Both in the computation of the cohomology groups and in the construction of the character formula, the Weyl group of the infinite-rank affine Kac-Moody algebra of A-type plays an essential role.

Abstract: We consider the non commutative setting given by a ring A, an A-bimodule M and T the corresponding tensor algebra. We prove that the Hochschild cohomology of quotients T/I by positive ideals coincides with the homology of A whenever the quiver of M has no oriented cycles. If the quiver is an arrow (i.e. T is a triangular two by two matrix algebra) the Hochschild cohomology belongs to a long exact sequence. For other quivers, a spectral sequence converging to the Hochschild cohomology will be described in a forthcoming paper.

MR Review: The authors show that for $G$ a finite abelian group, and $k$ any commutative ring, there is a an algebra isomorphism $HH^*(kG,kG)\cong kG\otimes H^*(G,k)$, where $HH^*(\Lambda,M)$ is the Hochschild cohomology algebra of $\Lambda$ with coefficients in the $\Lambda$-bimodule $M$, and $H^*(G,k)\cong HH^*(kG,k)$ is the group cohomology algebra. This result was suggested by the description of the Hochschild cohomology in the case in which $k$ is a field of positive characteristic in the work of T. Holm \ref[Comm. Algebra 24 (1996), no. 6, 1957--1969; MR 97c:13012]. For the case of a non-abelian group $G$, the authors offer a conjectural structure for $HH^*(kG,kG)$ and indicate some evidence for the conjecture that can be derived from the abelian case.

The variety of Lie bialgebras
J. Lie Theory 13(2003), No.2, 579-590
Abstract: We define a Lie bialgebra cohomology as the total cohomology of a double complex constructed from a Lie algebra and its dual, we show that its 2-cocycles classify Lie bialgebra formal deformations and we prove the usual cohomological condition (i.\ e. $H^2=0$) for formal rigidity. Lastly we describe the results of explicit computations in low--dimensional cases.

Description: The work on Stallings on relationship of 1st and 2nd homology and lower central series of group (having a Lie-algebaric counterpart by Knus and Stammbach) has an a analogue for derived series of group. In particular, if for two groups A and B, H^1 and H^2 are "close enough", then A isomorphic B. Some completion construction is involved, which preserves H_1 and injects H_2.

On a certain Lie algebra defined by a finite group
Amer. Math. Monthly 114 (2007), 633-639
Description: There are numerous constructions relating groups and Lie algebras, and here is another one. Let G be a group. One can easily see that the space spanned by elements of the form g - g^{-1} (g\in G) in the group algebra is closed under the (usual) commutator. The authors describe the structure of the so obtained Lie algebras in the case of finite group and the complex ground field. The answer is both fascinating and not. It is not, as the resulting list is somewhat boring: each such algebra is a direct sum of Lie algebras from the series gl, o, and sp. It is, since the direct sum is parametrized by characters (real, symplectic, and complex) of the group. But perhaps this is not so surprising after all, as the structure of the (usual associative) group algebra immediately suggests connection with matrix algebras and irreducible group representations. One may wonder what could happen for not necessarily finite groups and ground fields of positive characteric. Perhaps one can apply more pedestrian computational approach not utilizing the elegant connection with group characters (say, absence/presence of nilpotent elements of order 2). This construction (albeit in a somewhat different context) was already presented in A.E. Zalesskii & M.B. Smirnov, Lie algebra associated with linear group, Comm. Algebra 9 (1981), 2075-2100.
